When the Cotentin was cut off on 18 June, three American divisions moved northwards, towards Festung Cherbourg where the Germans, now isolated in the peninsula, had fallen back. But this fortress was turned mainly towards the sea. The final battle took place from 22 to 30 June, step by step, leading to the capitulation of General von Schlieben on 26 June.
However, the fighting only finished four days later at la Hague. The Americans took 39 000 prisoners in this battle which was their first victory in Normandy.
