Being in the middle of the very heavy fighting during the Battle of Normandy, Bayeux and the Gold Beach sector have often been forgotten by the historians. The Tilly-sur-Seulles sector has previously been the subject of a big book, already out of print. Bayeux deserved this study that provides a lot of unpublished information and photographs. Hour by hour we follow the arrival of the British troops in Bayeux on 7 June until the last skirmishes, Lieutenant Schumann’s speech on the 8th, General de Gaulle’s on the 14th which set up Bayeux as the capital of Free France with the appointment of François Coulet.
There are remarkable photos of daily life from 5 to 14 July, building the “By-Pass” around the intact city which had been converted into a hospital town, taking in refugees in the middle of a devas- tated region where it was hell for the civilian population.
